For instance, Lieser said Chamber financial and accounting information will soon be kept on computer. Although many documents are still kept in manual files, Lieser said the Chamber hopes to store all information on computer eventually. The Chamber also has a back-up system installed in the office for those times when the primary computer system fails, Lieser said. The only times information was completely lost in a system was during power failures, he said.
"We've lost very few things," he said. "For the most part, we haven't dumped much, so to speak." Ohio University-Lancaster's coordinator of computer labs and services, John Underwood, said com puters at the university are not connected with each other, but are part of a main frame computer system at the main campus in Athens. OU-L has backup communication lines connected with Athens to prevent the loss of information during a time of crisis, Underwood said. When an OU-L computer is inoperative due to faulty equipment, it does not affect other computers on campus, Underwood said. But if a communications line connected to Athens is down, OU-L computers can not be used until the line is repaired, he said.
"Recent weather knocked out one communications line and it wasn't repaired until yesterday," Underwood said. "Power outages have caused some problems with computers, but we haven't had any lightning strike and seriously hurt any lines, luckily." Barry Ritchey, vice presidentcashier of Standing Stone National Bank, said his bank also has back-up systems in the event of a power outage or an equipment failure.
Ritchey said Standing Stone has information stored in computer systems at different sites in case the system in Lancaster fails. Of the companies reporting quarterly earnings so far, Johnson said, 66 have been above expectations, 66 below and 29 on the mark. The broader market was held down by lower bond prices as investors worried for a second day about Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan's remarks before Congress on Tuesday, said James Melcher, president of Balestra Capital. Greenspan told Congress the inflation level was "disappointing." He also suggested U.S. interest rates migh' rise. Bond investors dislike inflation, which erodes the value of fixed-income securities.
Share prices have Taken their cue from bonds recently. The lower yields that come with rising bond prices make the potential returns from stocks more attractive.
