The Morning Union from Springfield, Massachusetts (2024)

2 SPRINGFIELD, TUESDAY, JULY 11, 1967 SPORTS THE SPRINGFIELD UNION, SPORTS The Morning Line By GARRY BROWN Pitching to a Waner Art Ditmar gave it a double-pump. then fired. Paul Waner swunz. but didn't get a good piece of the pitch. He sent it hopping toward first base.

Dale Long one-handed it and made a quick flip to Ditmar covering the bag. Waner was out, the inning was over, and the Yankees were on their way to a 3-0 win. Sound like A baseball fantasy? It isn't, but it comes close. It's a partial playback of last Saturday night's action i in that pastel palace known as Shea Stadium. The occasion was the New York Mets' old-timers night.

Ditmar, Long and Waner were among the invited gaffers. The affair served as a salute to George Weiss, six-time winner of "major league executive of the year" honors when ho general-managed the Yanks to almost total domination of the baseball world. After leaving them in 1960. Weiss went to the Mets, and directed their first club in 1961. Berkshire-Bred Boys As a fitting gesture to that retired baseball brain, the Mets accumulated as many of Weiss' 1960 Yanks and '61 Mets as were available, and pitted them in a two-inning exercise in nostalgia.

Ditmar and Long. -Berkshire-bred boys who made good marks in the majors--were with the 1960 Yankees. Art, a Pittafield native, coaches at American International College and lives in Longmeadow. Lonz. a native of Adams and resident of North Adams, is in his second season as an International League umpire.

Casey Stangel, who steered the glory train as Yankee manager from 1949 to '60, was placed in charge of 1960 the Bomber old-timers. Another fitting gesture, since the club was his last as Yankee chief. He retired after that season, only to bounce back as manager of the Mets. His rival in strategy Saturday was Lawrence Peter Berra, managers in baseball history to be fired one of the few after winning a pennant (Yankees, 1964). Yogi now coaches with the Mets.

"I was surprised at how many of the old gang showed up," Ditmar said as he looked back on his New York jaunt. "I think everybody was there except Luis Arroyo, John Kubek, and of course the guys who are still Blanchard, Tony playing, Mantle and Howard." Art said the old-timers roster was loaded with pitchers Whitey Ford, Fob Turley, Ralph Terry, Bill Stafford, Duren "So we each pitched to one batter." Ryne Some Special Guests Ditmar got a kick out of facing Waner, who was one special guests for the occasion. Others included of several Yankee greats Joe DiMaggio, Charlie Keller and Bill Dickey. 50 old, I don't think he could even see me," Art said with a chuckle. "But he hit the ball.

I guess he could always do that." known as "Big Poison" in his days as a PittsWaner, paragon, is a member of the Hall of Fame, brother Lloyd. Paul batted .333 for his 20-year career. admitted that he got a thrill out of seeing DiAlthough Ditmar played big league baseball for nearly 10 years, he hit.

The Jolter, now 32. socked a double off the Maggio left field barrier on one hop. Bob Cerv (remember that muscle-man outfielder?) also ripped a double in the same frame. "Those guys looked gond at the plate," Ditmar said. "Joe really swings nice." Probably the best-Inoking player in the game was second baseman Bobby Richardson, who retired after last season.

"He looks like he could help any ball club right now, especially the Yankees," Ditmar cracked. A Touch of Sadness It seems that every old-timers gathering has its touch of sadness. Saturday's was provided by Duke Maas, a former pitcher for the Yankees and Tigers. Mass, only 36, is suffering from crippling arthritis, and hardly can get around. But he was there, watching from a box seat.

The Duke was a bullpen stalwart for the '60 Yanks. Ditmar said that DiMaggio, naturally, received the biggest welcome from the crowd. They also let loose for Stengel. "He talks as much as ever, and in his own language," Ditmar remarked. Art retired after the 1962 season.

Since leaving the majors, he had not been to a big league park until Saturday (which could support the theory that guys love to play baseball, but can't stand watching it). Probably the happiest person in the stadium was John Ditmar, Art's eight-year-old son. He saw many of his haseball cards come to life when the Braves battled the Mets following the old-timers show. "I imroduced him to DiMaggio," Ditmar said, and he turned to me and asked, 'who's Right then, Art realized how old the old-timers really are. "Absolutely not," says owner Walter O'Malley. He says he's had a few feelers, but is saying no. Quoted by Durslag O'Malley's comments were quoted Monday by columnist Mel Durslag of the Los Angeles Her al d-Examiner. Durslag wrote that there had been rumors of A possible sale due to inheritance problems.

"I would call them feelers more than offers. I'd say I have had about a half-dozen." How has he reacted? "I never let the flirtation go beyond a kiss." Is even a kiss significant? "Not to me. I'm a very polite fellow. Someone sits down with me and talks business--and I listen. But I have no intention of selling." One report says that an interested oil company has placed the value of the team, Dodger Stadium and the real estate at roughly $55 million.

Is that accurate? "Come up a little." Hornung Gets Final Checkup SAN DIEGO, Calif.

(AP) The New Orleans Saints sent halfback Paul Hornung to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Monday for a final checkup before he begins drills with the new National Football League team. Hornung, the former Notre Dame Heisman Trophy winner who became the Golden Boy the Green Bay Packers, was acquired by the Saints in the expansion draft last winter. "Paul is just having a routine checkup on his neck," said Saints Coach Tom Fears. A pinched nerve in the neck kept Hornung on the sidelines most of the 1966 season at Green Bay.

"'He has already received a bill of health from our doctors, but we wanted to make perfectly sure he's ready before taking part in any contact work," said Fears. He added that Hornung would return to the training camp here later this week. UP The favored National League will send San Francisco's Juan Marichal against Dean Chance of the Minnesota Twins today in a bid for a record fifth straight over the injury-riddle American League squad. With two of his big sluggers, Al Kaline of Detroit and Frank Robinson of Baltimore, out of action due to injuries, Manager Hank Bauer of the American League must count on a wellrested pitching staff to stop the Nationals. Unusual Starting Time The game has an unusual starting time of 4:15 PDT (7:15 p.m. EDT) in order to send the television (NBC) account into prime evening hours in a large section of the country. About 46,000 fans were due to turn out in Anaheim's fine tripledecked stadium which is playing host to the game for the first time.

The National has won four straight, eight of the last 10, including one tie, and holds a 19- 17-1 edge in the series that once was completely dominated by the American League. Manager Walter Alston of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Bauer of Baltimore, who got the jobs by winning the pennants last year, were not certain about their pitching after the starters. "My second pitcher probably will be Jim McGlothlin" (California Angels), said Bauer. "Then we also have Gary Peters (Chicago), Catfish Hunter (Kansas City) and Al Downing (New York) all rested since Friday. probably won't use Jim Lonborg (Boston), Joel Horlen (Chicago) and Steve Hargan (Cleveland) who pulled a muscle Sunday." After listening to Bauer at a noon press conference, Alston said, "I don't know how Hank can have five rested.

He must have some pull." Ferguson Jenkins of the Chicago Cubs was Alston's likely second pitcher with all of the others, except Claude Osteen of Los Angeles who worked Sunday, available as needed. Marichal, 29, the high-kicking dandy from the Dominican Republic, has a 12-8 record. He has allowed only one earned run in 11 innings of All-Star pitching. He started in 1965. In his latest outing this season he beat the Dodgers with a four-hitter Saturday.

Choose Center Fielders. Chance, 26, also a right-handoffer, right-handed against the batting lineup, predominantly has an 11-7 record in a fine comeback for the Twins who got him from the Angels last winter. Chance was the All-Star starter in 1964 at Shea Stadium, the year he won 20 games for the Angels. He was not a great favorite at Anaheim last year, the Angels' first year in their new park. As neither club had a center fielder in starting line-up, selected by the vote of players, managers and coaches, the managers had to make the decisions.

Alston decided to use Hank Aaron of Atlanta in center although he normally plays right. Bauer went to Tony Oliva of Minnesota, a also a right fielder. "T'd rather have only one man out of position than two," said Alston who added he had considered moving Lou Brock of St. Louis from left to center. Roberto Clemente of Pittsburgh the right fielder.

Two Hub Outfielders Bauer has two Boston outfielders in left and right, Carl. Yastrzemski and Tony Conigliaro. Oliva replaced Kaline in the starting line-up and Conigliaro takes over for Frank Robinson. Kaline has a broken bone in his right hand and Robinson still has double vision after colliding with Chicago's Al Weis. Bill Freehan of Detroit is the catcher. Petrocelli had to leave a game over the weekend due to an injured hand but is available. Second baseman Bill Mazeroski and shortstop Gene Alley, Pittsburgh's double play combination, form the heart of the National infield.

Orlando Cepeda of St. Louis at first base and Rich Allen of Philadelphia at third. Joe Torre of Atlanta will be the catcher. Primary Objective All starters, except pitcher, must go at least the first three innings. No pitcher can go more than three, unless the game goes into extra innings.

"I came out here to win," said Bauer, managing his first AllStar team. "If it takes 11 to do it or if it takes all the squad it makes no difference. Some guys just come out to try to play everybody." Asked about the late inning replacements, Alston said, "First I will do all I can to win and then will try to get as many as I can into the lineup." Alston said this year's National League pitching probably is not quite as strong as last year's because Sandy Koufax, the 1966 starter, is among the missing. The retired Koufax, incidentally will be working on the telecast. Willie Mays, All-Star the San Francisco Giants, is not in the starting line-up for the first time since 1957.

Willie ubdoubt-1 edly will be in there at the earliest possible moment for he holds a host of All-Star records. Mickey Mantle, another super star and regular All-Star starter in other years, probably will be limited to a pinch hitting role. The New York Yankee veteran is the third first baseman on the American squad. Alston has won more All games than any other manager and owns a 5-2 record in this competition, the proceeds from which go into the player pension fund. All of the National League players are healthy and ready to go except pitcher Denny Lemaster of Atlanta who has been replaced by Chris Short of Philadelphia.
